The Selection Process - Theory and Practice Part 1

The recruitment process can be defined as 'the way in which workers are attracted and found to fill vacant positions in the company'. The human resource selection process should result in the recruitment of candidates based on their performance and skills, as well as their attitude towards the job and the company, which is essential for achieving the organisation's goals.

Recruitment, as a part of the so-called Human Resource Management (HRM), starts with the identification of a vacant position in the organization, and then the HR department analyzes the requirements for the given position, followed by reviewing applications, screening (interviewing) and determining a short-list of preferred candidates, and finally the process ends with the hiring of the right and best candidate for the position.

What is the selection process in HRM?

Selection is perhaps the most important function or one of the most important functions of the HR department. An HR manager uses different approaches to find potential candidates. The recruitment methods used to contact candidates differ depending on the source.

The recruiter in charge of selection often analyzes the activities in a position to determine the skills and abilities needed to perform the job. Once the required skills and abilities are clear, the search for people with the desired characteristics begins. Recruiters explain to potential candidates the profile of the position, the duties and finally the benefits the company provides. Candidates who confirm their interest in the position undergo a follow-up screening (on documents) and interview, and finally the most suitable candidates are identified for the position.

In short, a good selection process includes the following steps:

  6. InitialShortlistingcandidates
  7. Conducting interviews
  8. Evaluation of candidates
  9. Check references and previous work experience
  10. Preparing and sending a job offer (JobOffer).
  11. Administrative work (required documents and preparation of the contract) and introduction to the company or so-called on-boarding.
